I had the most beautiful experience and conversation last night, but before I get into that, I want to tell you about this amazing class that's available right in our area.

Hype Studios is located in Torrance, California, and it offers a variety of classes. I was searching for a class that taught Michael Jackson's iconic moves, and after months of searching, I stumbled upon this studio which is the ONLY one that actually has a whole hour dedicated to all Michael & Janet Jackson's original choreography.
The class is called "Jackson Power Hour" and is on Mondays and Wednesdays.
Jackson Power Hour is taught by a wonderful, talented instructor/dancer/choreographer, Joey Cooper.
Initially, I was very intimated at the thought of attending this class because let's face it, Michael and Janet Jackson's moves are beyond this world and super advanced. However, once you step a foot into this class, all your fear and worries are out the door.
Joey Cooper is very warm, friendly and starts each class explaining what the class is all about. He explains to you that the studio initially thought of the class as just using Michael and Janet Jackson's music while learning hip hop or various moves. However, since Joey knows all the original choreography, having learned it from the Jacksons' choreographers themselves or some on his own by studying the music videos and live performances, he actually teaches the original choreography of the two greatest entertainers in the history of music.
The students taking the class aren't necessarily professional dancers, which means everyone is there because they want to learn, they love both Michael & Janet Jackson, and there is no competition whatsoever.
Each class, there is an air of mystery because you won't know until you go that day what choreography you will learn as he randomly picks the songs.
I am personally very familiar with Michael Jackson's music videos and all his dance moves, but I have a little more difficult digesting Janet Jackson's intricate choreography. Occasionally, when I see the choreography we are about to do, I think to myself "oh, it's not going to happen tonight", but to my great astonishment, at the end of each class, I actually do learn it and walk away with this great sense of accomplishment.
Each class is fun, different, unique and as you take more of his classes, you become more confident and accomplished as a person and a dancer.
The students in class can ask questions any time, and the pace of each class is just perfect!
It is truly amazing how Joey manages to teach us such complex yet beautiful choreography in an hour, and everyone in class walking away with something each time.
It is one of my happiest moments as I feel that I can forget all the troubles and escape to the world of Michael & Janet Jackson.
Last night, a fellow student and I had an awesome conversation with Joey Cooper. We thanked him for doing what he does, and how much it means to us.
Michael Jackson was/is all about peace, unity and love. He is recognized all over the world, even in the most remote places, and through his music and dance, we can bring unity among people all over the world, reduce violence and conflicts and together learn his dance moves.
I am so grateful that I get to learn from Joey, and that I am part of this wonderful movement to continue Michael Jackson's legacy through his music and learning his choreography.
I really wanted to share this with you, and I highly recommend you check out this class:

When I first learned about Joey's class, I was grieving the loss of my Nana the same week; considering my heart was still delicate for the loss of MJ. On my first night, it was Jan 6th and I was the only student, and I learned "Beat It" with Joey! I could feel that he was a true MJ fan and dancing to that song was the perfect remedy for soul. I felt like all the pain and heartache disappeared and I had an enormous amount of fun! I am not a trained dancer and may get only 75% of the routine, but I feel great and accomplished after the class. I told Joey that I prayed for this about class 20 years ago and he made it come true! Thank you Joey, YOU ROCK! Thanks for keeping the same schedule too! I'm grateful!
