I've been thinking a lot about age. It's funny when people ask how old I am because they are all coming from different places and have different reasons for asking me for my age.
One may be asking out of genuine curiosity while another may be asking to see what my experience level is. Most say I don't act my age saying I carry many responsibilities and act very professionally for someone my age. I take it as a compliment but perhaps it can be an insult?
20 somethings often get a bad rep for being entitled, immature and aggressive, but I don't agree with that. I have actually seen people much older acting exactly like 18 year olds. That makes me think that age truly is subjective and is just a number.
You can be 25 but have the world of life experiences that perhaps someone who is 40 may never had. Some 20 somethings are immature and annoying but there are some of us who do take our career and life very seriously and act responsibly.
I have met many people much older than I who have never been anywhere in their lives. They never traveled the world, some of them gossip and act like they are in high school and some have zero cultural experience. I don't think it's so much that being older automatically makes you wiser, I think it is all about the experiences you've had in your life.
I have personally come across many young people who have been through so much that many adults can't begin to imagine. I think it's time that we stop judging people based on age and respect the life experiences they have had.
I've heard that perhaps I should be less responsible and have more fun and make mistakes since that's what I am "supposed to do" but I refuse. I think it's okay to not be a typical 20 something and act like myself.
So next time someone assumes I am much older, I know it's a compliment!
Age is subjective, your life experiences speak more about who you are as a person than how old you are.
